November 30, 2025 – “In the Time of Herod, We Long for God to Break In”– Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes

What Do You Fear Series

November 30th marks the first Sunday of Advent, a season of hope, waiting, and divine interruption. Our Advent theme, “What do you fear? In the time of Herod, we long for God to break in,” reminds us that even in times of uncertainty or darkness, God’s light still dawns. Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes' sermon, "In the Time of Herod, We Long for God to Break In" will focus on Lementations 3:55-57 and Luke 1:5-13.

The prelude, “How Brightly Shines the Morning Star” (Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern) by Johann Pachelbel (1653–1706), is based on a beloved Lutheran chorale often called the “Queen of Chorales.” Its radiant melody expresses the promise of Christ’s coming—a light breaking through the shadows of fear and waiting. Pachelbel, best known for his Canon in D, served as an organist in several major German cities and profoundly influenced the next generation of composers, including the Bach family.

Worship service will also include the hymns In the Bleak Midwinter/In the Time of Herod, and Star Child. And our Anthem, sung by the Chancel Choir, will be O Come, Emmanuel by Elaine Hagenberg.

During the offering, we hear “Nun danket alle Gott” (Now Thank We All Our God) arranged by Albert Travis, a modern American organist and composer. This hymn of gratitude bridges the season of Thanksgiving with the anticipation of Advent, reminding us to give thanks even as we wait for God’s renewal.

The service concludes with “Noël Étranger” by Louis-Claude Daquin (1694–1772), one of the brilliant French Classical composers and organists of the Baroque period. French Noëls were festive variations on popular Christmas carols, played on the grand organs of 18th-century cathedrals. Daquin’s lively setting captures the joy and wonder of the Nativity, sending us forth with hearts uplifted as Advent begins and the light grows brighter.

Come join us at 9:00 a.m. as we Worship Together. We hope something in this music and message uplifts and strengthens your spirit. You are always welcome here.
