March 29, 2026 – "When Jerusalem Met Jesus" – Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes

Palm Sunday

March 29th marks Palm Sunday. This week, in the sermon series "Face to Face & Heart to Heart," Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes' sermon "When Jerusalem Met Jesus" will focus on

Matthew 21:1-11.

After several weeks in John, this story from Matthew can feel brief and half-finished. Yet

Matthew reveals a city in turmoil, half-exultant at Jesus’ approach, half-terrified. Jerusalem meets Jesus with a parade, but quickly turns against him as the week progresses, with “hosanna” turning to “crucify” by Friday. Meeting Jesus does not miraculously change our human nature; we must continually orient ourselves towards him and away from fear, violence, and self-preservation.

Notes from the Bench

Today’s service begins in celebration and procession, recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Our choir, congregation, and bells unite in Procession and Hymn for Palm Sunday, beautifully arranged by Craig Courtney, capturing both the joy and reverence of this sacred day.

We join in singing All Glory, Laud and Honor, one of the most beloved Palm Sunday hymns. Its text was written in the 9th century by Theodulf of Orléans while imprisoned—legend says he sang it from his cell window as a Palm Sunday procession passed below. The king, moved by the hymn, ordered his release. Ever since, it has been a song of praise offered with both humility and triumph.

Our offertory, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, arranged by Kevin Hildebrand, is a vibrant and joyful setting of the great chorale, reflecting confident faith and gratitude. The closing hymn, Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart, calls us to continue in that spirit of praise, even as we journey toward the solemn events of Holy Week.

The postlude is a festive reprise of All Glory, Laud and Honor, arranged by Paul Manz, whose setting brings the morning full circle—ending as it began, with joyful acclamation.

Worship Service will also include the hymns Hosanna, Loud Hosanna, All Glory, Laud, and Honor, and Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart.

Come join us at 9:00 a.m. as we Worship Together. We hope something in this music and message uplifts and strengthens your spirit. You are always welcome here.
