June 14, 2026 – "The Lie That Changed Everything" – Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes

"Born Grabbing"

June 14th marks the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost. This week, in the sermon series, "The Wrestler", Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes' sermon " The Lie That Changed Everything " will focus on Gen. 27:1–40. We are capable of becoming someone we are not in order to take something that isn’t ours — and the worst part is that it works, at least for a while. God does not erase the consequences of Jacob’s deception. But the promise made before Jacob was born is not revoked by what Jacob does with his freedom.

The Arts in Worship

From the Root of Jesse, a new Tree has sprung, rooted in God’s love for us and bearing

branches of Christ’s teachings that are strong enough to carry our burdens. The prayer

scrolls hanging from the branches of the Tree of Life are a living testament of our faith in

the grace of God.

Notes from the Bench

This weekend, we celebrate Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. As we honor our nation's heritage, our music reflects themes of beauty, harmony, gratitude, and patriotism.

Our prelude is Hózhó by contemporary Diné (Navajo) composer and pianist Conner Chee. Chee's music beautifully combines Western classical traditions with the cultural heritage of the Navajo people. The title Hózhó refers to a foundational Diné concept encompassing balance, harmony, beauty, and right relationship with the world around us. Chee describes the piece as a musical journey toward restoring personal and spiritual balance when life feels unsettled. Through flowing melodies and reflective harmonies, the work invites us into a moment of peace and preparation for worship.

The anthem, For the Beauty of the Earth, features a flute solo by Laura Tongring. This beloved hymn of thanksgiving celebrates God's gifts in creation, human love, friendship, and worship. Our offertory is Highland Cathedral, arranged by Charles Callahan. Its soaring tune and noble character evoke a sense of reverence, strength, and inspiration.

The service concludes with The Stars and Stripes Forever. The familiar melodies and triumphant energy provide a fitting musical tribute as we observe Flag Day and celebrate the enduring ideals of our nation. May today's music inspire us to seek harmony in our lives, give thanks for God's blessings, and appreciate the diverse traditions that enrich our shared community.

Come join us at 9:00 a.m. as we Worship Together this Sunday. We hope something in this music and message uplifts and strengthens your spirit. You are always welcome here.
