The Third Sunday After the Epiphany
January 25th marks the third Sunday after the Epiphany. This week, in the sermon series "I Can See Clearly Now," Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes' sermon "(Re)Casting Your Nets" will focus on Matthew 4:12-23.
Notes from the Bench
Epiphany is the season of light—of eyes opened and hearts awakened to who Christ truly is. Our theme this Sunday, “I Can See Clearly Now,” reflects that moment when fog lifts and God’s call comes into focus. The Offertory, beautifully sung by Gavin and Lisa Rittenhouse, sets this theme in a contemporary voice with “I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash—a song of renewed vision, hope, and forward movement that resonates deeply with the Gospel call to follow.
The Postlude, “How Brightly Shines the Morning Star,” arranged by Angela Kraft Cross, brings Epiphany’s light to a joyful close. This beloved chorale—often associated with Christ as the radiant light of the world—is presented in a fresh, contemporary setting that bridges ancient faith and present-day expression. As the final notes ring out, we are reminded that Christ’s light not only reveals truth but sends us out with purpose and joy.
One of today’s hymns, “Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore,” offers a particularly poignant Epiphany story. Written by Spanish priest Cesáreo Gabaráin, the hymn reflects Jesus calling the fishermen by the Sea of Galilee—not because of their status or skill, but because of their willingness to respond. Originally composed for services involving priestly ordinations, the text emphasizes that Christ does not call the perfect, but calls ordinary people right where they are. The disciples’ clarity comes not all at once, but in the simple act of leaving their nets behind. Like them, Epiphany invites us to see more clearly—and to trust where Christ is leading us next.
May the music this morning help clear our vision, brighten our faith, and renew our readiness to follow.
Worship Service will also include the hymns Great Is Thy Faithfulness and Where He Leads Me along with the Anthem, Come Follow Me, sung by the Chancel Choir.
Come join us at 9:00 a.m. as we Worship Together. We hope something in this music and message uplifts and strengthens your spirit. You are always welcome here.
