The Fifth Sunday After the Epiphany
February 8th marks the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany. This week, in the sermon series "I Can See Clearly Now," Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes' sermon "You Are Saltier Thank You Think" will focus on Matthew 5:13-20.
Notes from the Bench
Today’s service is framed by music of the French Romantic symphonic organ tradition, performed by our guest organist Yun Wei Yu. The prelude, Cantabile by Alexandre Guilmant (1837–1911), offers a lyrical, singing line that invites reflection and calm attentiveness. Guilmant was a leading figure of the French Romantic organ school, known for writing expressive works that showcased the warmth and color of the symphonic organ. We conclude worship with Offertoire by Louis-James Alfred Lefébure-Wély (1817–1869), whose brilliant, joyful style reflects the exuberant side of 19th-century French organ music and sends us forth with confidence and light.
The offertory, His Eye Is on the Sparrow, arranged by Mark Hayes, reminds us that clarity of vision often comes through trust—knowing we are seen, known, and cared for by God. This theme is powerfully echoed in the choral anthem, The Staff of Faith by Craig Courtney, which weaves original text with the familiar hymn How Firm a Foundation. Using the image of a pilgrim’s staff, the anthem portrays faith as both support and guide along life’s journey—steadying us, strengthening us, and helping us move forward with assurance when the path ahead is not always clear.
May the music this morning help clear our vision, brighten our faith, and renew our readiness to follow.
Worship Service will also include the hymns This Little Light of Mine, Pass It On, and Go Forth for God along with the Anthem, The Staff of Faith, sung by the Chancel Choir and accompanied by Yun Wei Yu on piano, with Laura Tongring on flute, Alex Holste on piccolo, and Jace Gabbay on snare drum.
Come join us at 9:00 a.m. as we Worship Together. We hope something in this music and message uplifts and strengthens your spirit. You are always welcome here.
