December 14, 2025 – “Even in our Fear, We Are Called Forward”– Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes

What Do You Fear? Even In Our Fear, We Are Called Forward

December 7th marks the third Sunday of Advent, a season of hope, waiting, and divine interruption. Our Advent theme, “What Do You Fear?" reminds us that even in times of uncertainty or darkness, God’s light still dawns. Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes' sermon, "Even In Our Fear, We Are Called Forward?" will focus on Luke 1:26-39.

The Adult Handbell Choir will perform Carol of the Bells for our prelude and our Anthem, Advent Lullaby, will be performed by the Chancel Choir.

Our offertory this Sunday features “The Angel Gabriel Came Down,” arranged by Anna Laura Paige. This beloved Basque carol, often known as Gabriel’s Message, recounts the moment the angel Gabriel appears to Mary with the news that she will bear the Christ Child. Paige’s gentle, expressive setting highlights the carol’s sense of awe and quiet reverence, inviting us to reflect on Mary’s humble willingness and God’s unfolding promise.

Our postlude, “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella” by Keith Chapman, is based on the 16th-century French carol “Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella.” According to legend, Jeanette and Isabella—two milkmaids—arrived at the stable on Christmas Eve to tend their cows and instead discovered the newborn Christ-Child asleep in the hay. The carol’s narrator urges them to hurry and share the joyful news with the villagers so all may come and greet the Child.

Chapman’s vibrant organ setting reflects this sense of eager excitement. Its brisk tempo, lively rhythmic patterns, and nearly constant eighth-note motion create an atmosphere of anticipation, as though we too are running toward the manger. Subtle metrical shifts add movement and sparkle—evoking both the bustling village scene and the wonder of that holy night. The rhythmic patterns evoke the sounds of the two maids excitedly talking together in their excitement to tell the villagers of the good news. Listen for the dialogue in the middle section between the right hand and the pedals for this sound.

Worship Service will also include the hymns O Come, Take Heart (to the tune of O Come, O Come Emmanuel), Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, and While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks.

As we mark the Third Sunday of Advent, may these musical offerings draw us deeper into the story of anticipation, proclamation, and joyful readiness for Christ’s coming.

Come join us at 9:00 a.m. as we Worship Together. We hope something in this music and message uplifts and strengthens your spirit. You are always welcome here.
