iServe Opportunities at First Church
Hospitality
Our mission is to provide radical hospitality to visitors as well as our FUMC congregants.
- Hospitality Team Members - meet once per month to establish, implement and maintain the goals for radical hospitality.
Greeting Assistance
- Greeters - smile, welcome, and provide information to visitors and congregants at various locations around the church for the 9:00 or the 11:11 service. Need to come 40 minutes prior to the 9:00 service and 30 minutes before the 11:11 service.
- Welcome and Information Booth Volunteers - provide directions and information to visitors and congregants while sitting in the Welcome and Information Booth. Volunteers are needed before and after the 9:00 service and before the 11:11 service.
Social Time Assistance
- Social Time Drink Servers - serve coffee, tea, and lemonade after the 9:00 service and clean-up after the social time.
- Social Time Drink Preparers - prepare the coffee, tea, and lemonade prior to social time after the 9:00 service.
- Courtyard Social Time Set-up and Take-down volunteers - set up and take down tables and chairs in the courtyard on mild Sunday mornings for the 9:00 Social Time.
- Courtyard Social Time Coordinator - schedules volunteers to set up and take down tables and chairs in the courtyard on mild Sunday mornings for the 9:00 Social Time.
Nametag Assistance:
- Nametag Coordinator - collects the names of visitors and congregants who need nametags each Sunday and gets them to the church secretary. Also, collects the tags after the services and returns them to the nametag storage areas.
- Nametag Assistant - helps to distribute nametags each Sunday in the narthex by directing congregants to stored tags and by directing visitors to obtain temporary tags.
Visitor Follow-up Assistance:
- Follow-up Callers - make phone calls to first-time visitors
- Follow-up Caller Coordinator - collects the names of the first-time visitors from the office and contacts the Follow-up Callers to make the calls. The Coordinator also records the visitor’s names and any other pertinent information about them.
- Potluck Volunteers - assist with setting up, serving, and cleaning up for potluck brunches after designated Sunday services.
- Potluck Coordinator - organizes the volunteers for designated Hospitality potluck brunches.
Mission/Outreach
- Missions/Outreach Team plans, organizes and oversees the completion of projects which are designed to serve our church, community and world as we serve our risen Lord.
- East Valley Men's Center Food Servers prepare and serve food at the East Valley Men's Center once a month.
- Adopt-a-School Program takes servants into the classroom of poverty level schools and reads to students, mentors children and collects supplies as needed for those who cannot afford their own.
- Clothes Closet - Our mission is to provide professional clothing to those in need searching for employment and/or education. Service opportunities include sorting and stacking clothing and assisting those in need.
- iHelp Homeless Women’s Program - First Church is involved with a project along with six other churches in Mesa to provide a safe shelter for homeless women. One night per week the women are brought to our church after an evening meal to spend the night in a safe, comfortable place. We need volunteers who have special talents to provide activities for the women. That can be anything from cutting and styling hair to conducting a craft project for them or leading a Bible study. Consider what gifts you have that could be a service to the women.
Missions Special - Ripple OUTreach
Our goals are to assist Mesa seniors by giving of our presence, our time and our love. The Outreach Coordinator will also plan events in which the rest of the congregation can get involved as well with choir performances, holiday crafts and special visits.
- FUMC Open Door volunteers visit homebound members of our congregation at least once per month to chat, listen, and pray with the members.
- Community Open Door is currently volunteering with a monthly bible study and hymn sing in the Memory Care unit of Friendship Village. This is followed by a refreshment time, giving us an opportunity to visit with the residents. Opportunities are available but not limited to creating crafts, playing games, singing songs or visiting with the residents however you are able.
Missions Special - Project Hope Floats
Our mission is to assist parents during the 72-hour period the Safe Haven Law is in effect after an unwanted birth. Our goal is to be available at any hour to assist unwanted newborns in reaching the appropriate CPS drop-off locations. The parents will fall under no prosecution and no questions will be asked.
- Hope Floats Volunteer Teams of two are needed to carry the car seat, diaper bag and cell phone for one week at a time. You will be on call for 24 hours a day during your week of service. Should you receive a call from the phone at the church, you will be responsible for receiving the infant and delivering them to the nearest Emergency Room to wait for CPS. Phone calls from outside the church will be given instructions as to the nearest ER or fire department. Infant CPR and further training will be given upon enrollment.
Missions Special - Faith in Action Sunday
This program will give each and every member of First United Methodist Church of Mesa the opportunity to serve as a community within the community; an opportunity to BE the church. On Faith in Action/Service Sunday, the congregation will gather for prayer and worship and will then go either into the community to serve, or will gather together to complete a project that will benefit others.
The team will select projects that will offer the entire congregation a choice for service. The projects will all be designed to directly touch lives and reflect Christ’s love to others in our community. Through communication and careful planning, it is anticipated that every member of First United Methodist Church of Mesa will participate in this event.
Ugly Quilters
- Volunteers from within as well as outside of our church meet
and make sleeping bags for the homeless. The group meets on Thursday mornings in the Outreach Center.
Love Knots
Our mission is to craft a knotted blanket with each knot symbolizing a prayer for the recipient. Recipients include but are not limited to: baptized babies, shut-ins and those who are ill or hospitalized. Currently meeting on the second Tuesday of each month from 4:30-6:30pm in the Family Life Center.
- Knot heads responsibilities may include shopping, knotting, minor sewing and delivering blankets.
Loving Care
- Loving Care Volunteers serve funeral dinners and deliver other care to persons on an as needed basis.
Hospital Visitors
- Hospital visitors are needed on an occasional basis to make hospital visits to members and friends of the congregation. These volunteers will be utilized on an as needed basis with respect to the limits of their schedules.
Carla's Group
- Carla’s Group Members - Meet on the first Tuesday of the month to work on projects to benefit the community, such as the Child Crisis Center, Battered Women's Shelter, etc. We also make holiday craft items for our homebound members around holidays.
- Homebound Communion - Help is needed to deliver communion to those members that are homebound or in nursing homes.
Prayer Team
- Prayer Team Members meet for prayer each Sunday morning before worship. They pray for the church and concerns in our community and world.
Adult Choirs
- Chancel Choir Members meet from September-June with practices on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Members perform most Sunday mornings and at special services.
- Bell Choir Members practice on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm in the Adult Lounge from September-June. Performances occur once monthly during both services. Knowledge of music required.
Youth & Children’s Choir Support
- Bethlehem/Cherub Choir Assistant - Assist the director in duties which may include cleaning and inventory of choir robes, maintenance of carpet squares, musical instruments and scarves, and verifying microphones are ready prior to performances.
- Kingdom Kids/Celebration Choir Assistant - Assist the director in duties which may include cleaning and inventory of choir robes, filing and organizing music and verifying microphones are ready prior to performances.
- Spring Musical Support - Multiple volunteers needed. Duties include but may not be limited to: making copies, sewing costumes, set design and construction, organization and making phone calls.
- Substitute Piano Accompanist - Volunteer needed to be on call for occasional Wednesday evening and/or Sunday worship. Must have piano performance experience and be comfortable playing 4-part harmony.
- Youth Choir Assistant - Assist the director in duties which may include cleaning and inventory of choir robes, filing and organizing music.
Worship Team
- Worship Team Members would assist the pastoral staff in planning weekly and special worship. They would also work to create a worshipful and thoughtful worship setting.
- Ushers serve in worship by helping people find seats, collecting the offering, counting attendance and other miscellaneous duties at Sunday morning and special services. Times and services vary and scheduling is flexible.
- Liturgists read from scripture and/or written worship resources as part of the Sunday and special worship services. Multiple volunteers will be utilized and scheduled on an as needed basis.
- Communion Servers assist in serving communion at the first Sunday services of each month, Christmas Eve and special events.
- Altar Flowers volunteers to be on call to place fresh flowers on the altar at 8:30am on Sundays when needed, assist on special occasions such as before Mother's Day and Father's Day and to substitute for the coordinator as necessary.
- Altar Christmas Decorations need approximately 10 volunteers to set up and take down the Christmas decorations and greens.
- Sanctuary Helpers would do a variety of jobs to keep our sanctuary looking nice. These might include light cleaning, restocking of supplies and other duties. Persons would be used on a weekly basis but day and time would be flexible.
- CD Ministry & Recording Duplication volunteer needed to duplicate and label the CD recordings of the sermons and events, and then place the week's CDs at the information booth for immediate distribution.
- Sanctuary Sound Operators operate soundboards, record services using a computer program, and set up microphones as needed. Basic computer knowledge is helpful, but operational skills are minimal. The main trait needed is awareness and careful attention to worship as it occurs. Must arrive 30-45 minutes before worship begins to allow for appropriate set-up.
Children's Ministry
- Vacation Bible School Volunteers would assist in a variety of ways in helping to plan and staff our annual Vacation Bible School.
- Organization of Education Room volunteer needed once per quarter to clean and organize the Education Room.
- Chili lunch & Pie Auction has several opportunities to serve, including set- up, clean-up, meal prep, serving and baking.
- Summer Sunday School Teachers - Pick any age you would be interested in teaching for the summer! Dates vary depending on the current teacher's vacation needs. Lesson planning will be completed with assistance from the Children's Ministries coordinator.
Youth Support
- Serve to support youth events, mission trips and fundraising activities as needed.
Family Life Center Ministry
- Family Life Center Fix-it Person duties may include changing light bulbs, tightening screws on chairs, etc. and minor touch-up painting. Time commitment should be approximately 4 hours per month.
- Family Life Center Kitchen Helpers duties may include but are not limited to thoroughly cleaning the kitchen surfaces and appliances monthly, as well as maintaining and inventorying kitchen equipment and supplies.
Church Office Assistance
- Friendly volunteers with light computer and customer service experience will be trained to substitute for the Church Secretary on an as-needed basis in cases of sickness or family emergency. Must be available during church office hours of 9am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-2pm Fridays.
Trustees Support
- Handy Helpers are needed for handy jobs around the church; repairing, painting, organizing, moving items and cleaning as needed.
Communication Committee
- Journalist - An outgoing person who will interview members of the church for a "Spot Light On" feature in the Spire. This person could also supply other articles in the Spire and/or webpage.
- Photographer - This position would be required to take photos of events, activities and happenings in and around the church for use on the webpage, Facebook account, Spire, etc.
